Course Reflection:

Last week we watched Rip!: A Remix Manifesto in class and it was interesting because I have never heard of Girl Talk. After watching the documentary, you start to think, if people who can just put remixes on someone else's songs, not completely just copy it word for word but change a few things around, it can still be illegal and stolen copyright. The people who were unfortunately sued for downloading music, made me feel so irritated that these people who could've just easily deleted the music and never do it again be in so much debt. The music industry in my opinion, I don't feel sorry for because it wasn't the citizen's fault to be able to download music. If anything, it should just be the sites that allow people who can download music on youtube or on any converter (the people who created it). In a way I understand that it's not their music but it's just a way of expressing music and having a good time instead of thinking about all the technical things such as copyright. I don't know there's so many pros and cons about this topic, but overall, I enjoy documentaries such as this one that shows things to think about whether this person did something so bad or good for the people who love his music.

We also had a good class discussion about contracts and patents after we learned about it in class. Patents are very important to a designer because like every inventor, engineer, musician, etc -- you want your things to be yours and have credit for it. Especially if it's something that you know you helped better the environment.

RR06: Chapter 1-3.

Cradle to Cradle

Chapter 1: It talks about Industrial Revolution and how industrialists, designers, and engineers, did not see their designs to be part of a larger system outside of an economic one. The Industrial Revolution brought positive social changes such as technology advancement, communication, electricity, and increased productivity & agriculture. But they also discussed the flaws of some designs during the Industrial Revolution; according to cradle to grave, a lot of products go to waste as products became more and more advanced. Then it discusses further about products being crude, which means using the cheapest resources possible. End of the chapter, it goes on to talk about strategies to make the environment better and how to become more green and product efficient.

Chapter 2: Because our society is such a rapid growing population, Malthus warns about how people are not going to have enough resources to sustain themselves. It talks about not fixing the things but redesigning or recreating things in the environment. "Eco-effiency" is the way to go according to the four R's such as: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -- & Regulate.

Chapter 3: In this chapter, the main concept that I got was that products need to be continually used even if it is for different purposes. One quote that really stuck out to me was, "the key is not to make the human industries and systems smaller but to design them to make them bigger and better in a way that replenishes, restores, and nourishes the rest of the world."

This blog discusses about colors that range from interior design, fashion design, designer & artist's artwork, to natural environment designs. I love how the blogger gives you images of examples to their topic and give you a color scale to give it a better visual impact and meaning. It just has a lot of different fun topics of ways to read about how color affects the media, society, and environment. A fun topic that I read about was howpeople who have crazy hair also have color scale and 'the colorful World of Warcraft.' I never thought about the color scale and how colors do really make an impact on how well a design comes together.

This article written in 2009 by Steven Snell wrote about how color impacts corporate businesses such as: Hershey, US Bank, Best Buy'swebsite, Walmart,Coca Cola, McDonald's, etc. When we talked about branding in the beginning of the week, when you look at certain symbols and colors you automatically reminded what brands they're representing. This article talks about the impact colors have on products and brand's andthey evaluate it. Even several years from now, when these brands do update their sites, they still will have the consistent color to keep loyal customers to keep buying their brand and being familiar with it. They even give you a nice explanation of how it affects you as a designer which I thought was pretty good explanations.

This site also explains the use of the color theory in logo designs. It tells you the meaning of all the colors and the relationship of colors when you look at the color theory. They give examples of complementary, tetrad, and analogous relationships in logos suchas Fedex, McDonald's, 9Rules, etc. As a viewer, you just think that these colors just go well together, and since designers follow the color theory and relationships, theyare able to give viewers or customers a design that is appealing to the eye. Designers have to also to adapt to culture, media, and technology to update their knowledge of how to use colors as well. Meaning, each culture view colors differently, but when it really comes down to it, the symbolism and color of a logo can be spread throughout cultures and that's how designs can be universal to everyone's understanding.

This site provides articles, blogs, and videos about designers and color. The site refreshes itself automatically showing different articles that are currently being featured. The range of things to read about can go to skate, film, music, life, fashion, print etc. It's a way for designers to share their news about what projects they are doing as well as showing photographs of their art, lifestyle, and passion. Whether it be a film, fashion article, music, photography, they all share acommon purpose to show that color is important part of expression of design as well as art.

Since I love Interior Design, what else could be better to relate color and design together? I love this blog because I love reading blogs about interior space. The way designers use color to bring out emotion in a space is very important. If you're someone that loves to learn more about interior design and the way they use color, this blog definitely gives great examples with all the photographs they put on their blogs. They also try new innovative ways to use accessories in the room because it also gives the room texture. Interior Designers use the color theory to either make their rooms warm or cold colors, a cozy or spacious feeling, etc. Also, not only color but patterns and shapes also give color a different perspective and feeling when designing an interior space.

Course Reflection:

Last week, we learned about "Why is color essential in art & design education?" and "Environmental Design".

Color is important because each color has a meaning. We as human beings relate to these colors because they can be the visual expressions of our mood. We also use color as symbolism and we can quickly identify things in our environment from the way it is visually designed and interpreted. There are color harmonies such as monochromatic, analogous, compliment etc.

We also learned about eco-system tips and how designers are trying to make the environment efficient in a safer way. Some times are: learn about the environment issues, think of ways to recycle, ways to handle waste management, etc. As for Interior Designers, think of ways to insulate better to use less money, and try to use more natural lighting. Basically overall for all the design fields, use less harmful materials, benefit from resources around your environment, think of ways to use less money, and make the area space efficient.

RR05: McDonough Introduction

After reading this chapter, it made me really think about how we don't realize what we produce could be harmful to the environment. I'm a huge sneaker-head, and to hear that maybe someone had to suffer through dangerous chemicals in order to make money is very unfortunate to hear. I think I had an idea that people weren't doing such easy jobs when it comes to making miscellaneous things for us. I feel very spoiled in some sense that we can never be appreciate of who makes these products. We will never know how hard people's lives can be in just making simple shoes. In this chapter, we are introduced to Bill and Michael. Bill is an architect, who we learn a little bit about his background, and how he views what designers should do. He wants the best intentions when creating a building and is aware that not a lot of the materials manufactuers use are very unhealthy. He was asked to have a proposal for a Holocaust memorial, and build a daycare center in Frankfurt, Germany. His main concern is just being able to build a healthy environment to a school of children when he was asked to build a daycare because the materials we use are hazardous and not entirely safe. The other guy, Michael, is a chemist and became an active member of the Green Action Future Party when he became interested in environmental chemistry. He meets Bill, where they talked about toxicity and design. Then the chapter talks about how leather is a mixture of biological and technical materials (as well as other substances). They discussed about the idea of biodegradable materials, which would be detached after its use. Trying to make materials less harmful and being able to recycle as well. At the end of the chapter, it talks about how nature and ants create a productive and healthy environment, where as humans are the reason of declining ecosystems.
