J10: Our team as a whole was very productive and time efficient. We all took time out of our busy weeks and met up to make our final product. I think everyone did a great job contributing to the project and if changes were needed then people were willing to make our product stronger. Everyone did their sketches, research, and contribution to the project. I think I have always contributed fairly well and was always fair to my group. I always asked for their input and how they would go at the situation. I made sure I did my part of the research and helped with the critical thinking of how our product should be successful. Overall feelings about the project, it was a fun experience! However, I thought our product wasn't too unique however it would be nice to have something like that come straight out of your refrigerator where it already comes cold when you do go to the living room, patio, outdoor events, etc. I really like the design thinking way of how to make things and what factors to consider when making a product.

  • Reflects on the state of the project as a whole. What has your team been working on? What decisions have been made? What directions have you been heading in? How has the team been working, both organizationally and personally? Etc... -- We've been working on the final products and the dimensions of our portable refrigerator. We've been getting together out of class hours and making sure that everyone's on the same page with the product.
  • Reflects on your personal contributions to the project thus far. What roles have you been fulfilling? What have you brought to the table/conversation? What do you feel you have been doing well? What more could you be doing to facilitate the forward progress of the project? General feelings on the project? Etc... -- I have been fulfilling the role of trying to get everyone organized, making sure that everyone is doing their work, and getting everyone's contribution to the project. I think I have been doing well with listening to people's ideas, contributing to my part of the project, and making sure we're all organized for our presentation.
  • Documents the work being done on the project. Do you have scans of sketches you have done? Photographs of work happening? Notes, minutes, outlines, mind-maps, drafts, ideations, images, time-lines, goals, or any other evidence of the project's progress thus far? Etc...-- Yes, we are going to email all the sketches to my email as well as Kara's. So we can start on the presentation slides and have two people work on each topic such as: final product, kiosk, packaging, and the client/user.

Back to Haskett.

The chapters that we had to read about were where is design heading next and summarizes some of the ideas that they have throughout the reading. When I think of technology, I think of South Korea because my family is from there and it's just so crazy to know how much they have advanced within the past 40 years. Geographically, South Korea has no natural resources so they were assumed to be doomed economically but to know that their technology was such a success mind boggles me. As a designer, competing with technology with creativity is going to become harder in the future. Many people think that technology will overtake the design and creativity mind of it and who knows if technology gets too smart and thinks for itself. Are we going to program technology to be able to think for itself? It was always in our society that we had to adapt to technology and that's how we are shaped as a civilization. But I wonder how efficient our technology will be, will it be resourceful, harmful, beneficial? I'm all about designs and technology that will help our environment get better -- and I know the main purpose for technology is to make human life easier, but it should help us in a better way, not make us lazy and let something like technology do everything for us.

Our team members decided that we would do a portable refrigerator that were aimed for hunters, adventurous people, outdoor families, etc. The first meeting that we had with our groups, we got a lot of ideas down and already started working on what we should have for next week. I mentioned that we should all come up with sketches and research what our refrigerator would look like because the more input there is then the more we can collaborate together and make this refrigerator a hit. We each have our own vision and once we start to share our ideas we can all have a contribution to the design instead of one person doing all the work. I'm glad that our group is organized and know what assignments they have to do. Although all of our group members weren't there because they either don't show up for class or they're really sick, so I made sure that I would send out an email to everyone to remind them of what we're working on and what direction we're going towards.
My role in our group is - I definitely organized what we should do such as sketches, and mainly gave them questions to think about. Gave everyone an email and a reminder of what to include in their sketches. Although, this will be a hard concept to come up with, I believe that our group is creative enough to figure something out. By helping them with questions and things to think about, hopefully they will take my advice and curiosity and take it to the next level.
Documents - I told everyone to source their ideas and to bring in whatever they thought would help our group in designing this product. I think ever since Monday, we had a general idea of how we wanted to look like, it's just going to take some research on the dimensions that fits best for our clients. I'm going to keep bringing in my laptop and constantly research more ideas on how we can improve our product.

CR07

Course Reflection:

Last week we had guest speakers come in and talk to us about their project. They were called Cobego and their presentation were tips on how to succeed in design. Their project issue was about tissues, and they brainstorm ideas, and try to validate them. They also come up with solutions with the problem or situation. There were other issues as well that they went over and it was just really interesting to think about these kind of topics.

One of our assignments as well was to find letter shapes in our every day environment. You don't notice these things when you're just going to class everyday but to know that every shape or object that has a letter in it is really creative. These letters influence us not only in our words and writing, but how we see things as well.

RR07: Chapter 4-6.

Cradle to Cradle

Chapter 4: In order to keep the nutrient balance, the topic waste equal foods talks about two systems. Technical - consist of plastics and and metals that may not be returned to the earth and safely biodegraded without harm to the natural system. Technical nutrients can create energy. For example: industries retrieve parts of television sets and other service products from landfills.

Chapter 5: This chapter talked about respect for our diversity, and gave an example of a woman from India that would wash her clothes by her hands and rocks. So a manufacturer decided instead of making products that was one size for all, he would make products at a smaller scale -- because everyone calls for their own special needs. By having this new foundation, companies can now use this foundation for the environment even after use. The book even encourages people to throw their trash on their ground so it can decompose and give something back to the ground.

Chapter 6: Putting Eco-Effectiveness into Practice: There's five guiding principles -- 1.) Get "free of" known culprits, 2.) Follow informed personal preferences, 3.) Creating a "passive positive" list, 4.) Activate the positive list, Step 5.) Reinvent.

CR06

Course Reflection:

Last week we watched Rip!: A Remix Manifesto in class and it was interesting because I have never heard of Girl Talk. After watching the documentary, you start to think, if people who can just put remixes on someone else's songs, not completely just copy it word for word but change a few things around, it can still be illegal and stolen copyright. The people who were unfortunately sued for downloading music, made me feel so irritated that these people who could've just easily deleted the music and never do it again be in so much debt. The music industry in my opinion, I don't feel sorry for because it wasn't the citizen's fault to be able to download music. If anything, it should just be the sites that allow people who can download music on youtube or on any converter (the people who created it). In a way I understand that it's not their music but it's just a way of expressing music and having a good time instead of thinking about all the technical things such as copyright. I don't know there's so many pros and cons about this topic, but overall, I enjoy documentaries such as this one that shows things to think about whether this person did something so bad or good for the people who love his music.

We also had a good class discussion about contracts and patents after we learned about it in class. Patents are very important to a designer because like every inventor, engineer, musician, etc -- you want your things to be yours and have credit for it. Especially if it's something that you know you helped better the environment.

RR06: Chapter 1-3.

Cradle to Cradle

Chapter 1: It talks about Industrial Revolution and how industrialists, designers, and engineers, did not see their designs to be part of a larger system outside of an economic one. The Industrial Revolution brought positive social changes such as technology advancement, communication, electricity, and increased productivity & agriculture. But they also discussed the flaws of some designs during the Industrial Revolution; according to cradle to grave, a lot of products go to waste as products became more and more advanced. Then it discusses further about products being crude, which means using the cheapest resources possible. End of the chapter, it goes on to talk about strategies to make the environment better and how to become more green and product efficient.

Chapter 2: Because our society is such a rapid growing population, Malthus warns about how people are not going to have enough resources to sustain themselves. It talks about not fixing the things but redesigning or recreating things in the environment. "Eco-effiency" is the way to go according to the four R's such as: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -- & Regulate.

Chapter 3: In this chapter, the main concept that I got was that products need to be continually used even if it is for different purposes. One quote that really stuck out to me was, "the key is not to make the human industries and systems smaller but to design them to make them bigger and better in a way that replenishes, restores, and nourishes the rest of the world."

J06: Media Reviews

Theme: Design & Color

Source(s):

.:: Colour Lover's Blog ::.

This blog discusses about colors that range from interior design, fashion design, designer & artist's artwork, to natural environment designs. I love how the blogger gives you images of examples to their topic and give you a color scale to give it a better visual impact and meaning. It just has a lot of different fun topics of ways to read about how color affects the media, society, and environment. A fun topic that I read about was howpeople who have crazy hair also have color scale and 'the colorful World of Warcraft.' I never thought about the color scale and how colors do really make an impact on how well a design comes together.
.::Colors in Corporate Branding and Design ::.

This article written in 2009 by Steven Snell wrote about how color impacts corporate businesses such as: Hershey, US Bank, Best Buy'swebsite, Walmart,Coca Cola, McDonald's, etc. When we talked about branding in the beginning of the week, when you look at certain symbols and colors you automatically reminded what brands they're representing. This article talks about the impact colors have on products and brand's andthey evaluate it. Even several years from now, when these brands do update their sites, they still will have the consistent color to keep loyal customers to keep buying their brand and being familiar with it. They even give you a nice explanation of how it affects you as a designer which I thought was pretty good explanations.

.:: Logo Designer Blog ::.

This site also explains the use of the color theory in logo designs. It tells you the meaning of all the colors and the relationship of colors when you look at the color theory. They give examples of complementary, tetrad, and analogous relationships in logos suchas Fedex, McDonald's, 9Rules, etc. As a viewer, you just think that these colors just go well together, and since designers follow the color theory and relationships, theyare able to give viewers or customers a design that is appealing to the eye. Designers have to also to adapt to culture, media, and technology to update their knowledge of how to use colors as well. Meaning, each culture view colors differently, but when it really comes down to it, the symbolism and color of a logo can be spread throughout cultures and that's how designs can be universal to everyone's understanding.

.:: The Color Magazine ::.

This site provides articles, blogs, and videos about designers and color. The site refreshes itself automatically showing different articles that are currently being featured. The range of things to read about can go to skate, film, music, life, fashion, print etc. It's a way for designers to share their news about what projects they are doing as well as showing photographs of their art, lifestyle, and passion. Whether it be a film, fashion article, music, photography, they all share acommon purpose to show that color is important part of expression of design as well as art.

.:: Faiella Design ::.
.:: Blog ::.

Since I love Interior Design, what else could be better to relate color and design together? I love this blog because I love reading blogs about interior space. The way designers use color to bring out emotion in a space is very important. If you're someone that loves to learn more about interior design and the way they use color, this blog definitely gives great examples with all the photographs they put on their blogs. They also try new innovative ways to use accessories in the room because it also gives the room texture. Interior Designers use the color theory to either make their rooms warm or cold colors, a cozy or spacious feeling, etc. Also, not only color but patterns and shapes also give color a different perspective and feeling when designing an interior space.

CR05

Course Reflection:

Last week, we learned about "Why is color essential in art & design education?" and "Environmental Design".

Color is important because each color has a meaning. We as human beings relate to these colors because they can be the visual expressions of our mood. We also use color as symbolism and we can quickly identify things in our environment from the way it is visually designed and interpreted. There are color harmonies such as monochromatic, analogous, compliment etc.

We also learned about eco-system tips and how designers are trying to make the environment efficient in a safer way. Some times are: learn about the environment issues, think of ways to recycle, ways to handle waste management, etc. As for Interior Designers, think of ways to insulate better to use less money, and try to use more natural lighting. Basically overall for all the design fields, use less harmful materials, benefit from resources around your environment, think of ways to use less money, and make the area space efficient.

RR05: McDonough Introduction

After reading this chapter, it made me really think about how we don't realize what we produce could be harmful to the environment. I'm a huge sneaker-head, and to hear that maybe someone had to suffer through dangerous chemicals in order to make money is very unfortunate to hear. I think I had an idea that people weren't doing such easy jobs when it comes to making miscellaneous things for us. I feel very spoiled in some sense that we can never be appreciate of who makes these products. We will never know how hard people's lives can be in just making simple shoes. In this chapter, we are introduced to Bill and Michael. Bill is an architect, who we learn a little bit about his background, and how he views what designers should do. He wants the best intentions when creating a building and is aware that not a lot of the materials manufactuers use are very unhealthy. He was asked to have a proposal for a Holocaust memorial, and build a daycare center in Frankfurt, Germany. His main concern is just being able to build a healthy environment to a school of children when he was asked to build a daycare because the materials we use are hazardous and not entirely safe. The other guy, Michael, is a chemist and became an active member of the Green Action Future Party when he became interested in environmental chemistry. He meets Bill, where they talked about toxicity and design. Then the chapter talks about how leather is a mixture of biological and technical materials (as well as other substances). They discussed about the idea of biodegradable materials, which would be detached after its use. Trying to make materials less harmful and being able to recycle as well. At the end of the chapter, it talks about how nature and ants create a productive and healthy environment, where as humans are the reason of declining ecosystems.

Course Reflection: (Week 04 - Accessibility).

Last week we talked about accessibility and how designers can think about ways to help improve the environment for everyone. It's hard to come up with a method approach to make a product universal. When I think about this topic, I get so eager to know what can be done because that's what designers do, help make the society better and more efficient. Also, while doing the scavenger hunt last week, it was interesting to know that some of the well known designers designed some of our Ohio State buildings. It's always fascinating to know who was hired to build something on a university campus. It's going to be a building that students will use for however long the university will stand. As a designer, it must be interesting to think of ways for students to feel happy with the interior space of buildings. Overall, last week's slideshow/lecture is the main purpose of what designers should do, make a design that as accessible to everyone.

RR03

Reading Response: Haskett Chapter 7-8.

Chapter 7: In chapter 7, it talked about how globalization affects how design is created in different cultures. I love how they mentioned Korea having specialized refrigerators because of the cabbage called kimchi that is essential in every Korean dish. When you think of designing a product, and you're trying to shape your identity so people know you for your services, it's hard to accommodate and please everyone. With the help of the Internet, the service and design has definitely improved and advanced. From the Internet, Fedex let their customers track their packages and create a new identity of being reliable to send them their things within a timely and successful manner. It gave the customers better service and less operating costs for Fedex as well when you look at the bigger picture. In the conclusion of the chapter, it emphasizes image and identity together and the meaning between the two can be confusing. Image is a projection of how a company would like to be understood by customers, where as identity is the reality of what a company delivers as experienced by the customers. Which I totally agree with, because you can have a simple image, however, it depends on how the customers experience your service, and if it's successful, then your image creates an identity for you for being reliable and assuring.

Chapter 8: This chapter talks about system, and how it is defined in the design aspect. I like the quote, " the purpose of a system is to give clear information about the consequences of taking a particular turn or direction, but leaving users to decide on exactly where they wish to go." So therefore it is the system's responsibility to be precise and clear so the customers can understand and meet expectations of what the system is trying to achieve. Systems use a lot of symbolism and information to make things easier for the customers to understand. "In addition, the most effective systems in terms of ease of use are those that have patterns of consistency and standardization throughout the system, enabling users to know what to expect and sustaining a sense of security and familiarity." This quote lead to the use of modularity systems that enable a unit to be tested and produced to high standards. Dell, Sony, etc were big examples in the book of modular system approaches.

A02: Long Description of Designer

EILEEN GRAY

Eileen Gray

I chose an influential, woman designer because I would like to recognize more women designers in the world.

Eileen Gray went to Slade School of Fine Arts and also worked at a furniture-workshops to help jump start on her life's work. Gray first went to Paris to go to other schools such as Ecole Colarossi and Academie Julian. However, while she was living in Paris she learned Japanese lacquer techniques because she was inspired by Japanese artisan Seizo Sougawara. Around 1910, she started making lacquer screens. Her first major client was Jacques Doucet, who noticed her and this is when she started to become well known. Another big hit was when she came back to France after World War 1, she was commissioned by Mathieu Levy to redecorate the interior of her apartment in Paris. In 1922, she opened her shop and sold her lacquer tables and screens. Eileen's work was influenced by contemporary architecture and she began making functional furniture. She's known for her famous furniture, "E-1027" side table with a circular glass on top with steel frame.

More importantly, what I found about Eileen Gray that was so inspiring but unfortunate is during World War II, she got her house destroyed by the German army. Because of her gender, she was denied a lot of support, however, in the late 1960s her works were in an Italian magazine that helped her get back in the business and have a successful auction in 1972.

Reflection:
Honestly, during that time period for me, I can't even imagine what life would be like during war. I know we're going through it now, but it isn't as prominent in our lives as it should be. A woman back then with gender discrimination and able to come out to the top as one of the most influential designers is amazing. And it's great to know even when these designers aren't alive anymore, their designs and works are still influential to today's design. I prefer the antique furniture works better than the modern ones because I feel like it's such a style that no one can easily forget. It's a progression of what people had to go through to get to where we are now with more knowledge of how to make suitable designs for people in the society.
